Carbonated water was originally developed in the eighteenth century to emulate naturally sparkling mineral water. It was found that this water was the most effective and most palatable medium to give quinine medicine to British servicemen in India, who were at risk for contracting malaria. Thus Indian Tonic Water was born. It wasn’t long before British army officers, who found gin an indispensable antidote to the tropical heat, began mixing water with gin - creating one of the most famous mixed drinks in the world.
